Chapter Thirteen

Deirdre's future work space smelled like a potpourri shop, thanks to a series of lavender candles burning on a stand near the little love seat draped with an old piano scarf. I noticed an incense stick tucked in the side of a bookshelf, its tip burned — cedarwood cinnamon, according to the box on the platter. I wondered what properties it had for balancing mind and body.

"Tea?" Deirdre asked me. "I have Earl Grey or a blend called Morning on the Meadow — it has sort of a cloves and sage spice to it."

My client was not wringing her hands nor clutching them for dear life, which I took as a good sign. Her smile seemed genuine, even if it was still a little bit smaller than I would prefer for a bride talking about her wishes with a person literally paid to do nothing but take them seriously.

The green rolled scarf knotted through her hair set off its fiery aspects, and I thought of Nic's remark about what made him intrigued to know her better. I just needed to light a similar spark with our conversations about this celebration — one that would make a very charming and sympathetic man a part of her life forever.

"No thanks, I'm fine," I answered. "I love what you've done with this room." Since my last visit, its boxes had been unpacked onto shelves, and the bare white walls showcased modern art and a couple of traditional Indian prints that looked very old and worn and were probably family pieces that belonged to Nic. The color scheme reflected reds and a soft burnt orange in the drapes, the sofa pillows, and the little carpet rolled across the floor, shades that reminded me of her wedding colors. I took that as a good sign, too.

"It's a work in progress," she said, as she tidied away some magazines on her coffee table, making room for my portfolio. "I'm planning to paint this space eventually, but I wanted to focus on doing most of the redecorating in our living space."

"Sounds like a good plan," I answered. "Speaking of which, Nic said you've been thinking about the music for the reception?"

"I have, actually." Deirdre paused. "I thought a string quartet would be a bit stodgy. We have a few hymns chosen for the church ceremony, as you know ... I'm torn on whether to have a folk group or a jazz trio for entertainment. Perhaps a deejay with both?" She smiled.

"What sort of music do you think fits your wedding vision best?" I asked. "Think of it like this — do you want it to set the scene — provide the background as your guests mingle and talk? Or do you want them on their feet, dancing to celebrate your nuptials?"

"Dancing?" she joked.

"Are we talking merrymaking and frolicking, or the chicken dance and the limbo?" I asked.

"The first," she said. "I don't think shameless lack of dignity and discothèque lights would be appropriate in your barn."

"Okay,
